UNSC bows to India, mum on Iran

New York, India on Thursday joined a diplomatic initiative by the United States and Israel in the Security Council to issue a statement condemning the recent terror attack on an Israeli diplomat in New Delhi, after others came around to heed its insistence not to mention Iran. In a press statement issued by UNSC president Kodjo Menan from Togo, the UN "condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in New Delhi, India, aimed at Israel's diplomatic personnel, which resulted in injuries to diplomatic personnel and civilians, and the recent attempted terrorist attack in Tbilisi, Georgia". India could not have stayed away from supporting this UNSC statement, given that Indian citizens were injured, but India was insistent that Iran not be mentioned by name since investigations were not over. It "reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed". Only the New Delhi and Tbilisi attacks were mentioned in the UN statement. The Bangkok incident, which actually caught ...

Bangkok bomb suspects 'partied in Pattaya'

Bangkok, Three Iranians suspected in a botched bomb plot targeting Israeli diplomats in Bangkok holidayed in the Thai resort of Pattaya just days before the blasts, an official said Friday. "The three suspects stayed in different hotels in Pattaya," an immigration officer in the coastal city who did not want to be named told AFP. Police have tracked down a Thai woman known as "Nancy" who escorted one of the men, Mohamad Khazaei, during his stay, he added. "The most important evidence we found are pictures in Nancy's mobile phone taken on the night of February 11 which prove that these suspects know each other," the officer said. Pattaya, about a two-hour drive southeast of Bangkok, has earned a reputation for its wild nightlife thanks to its thriving red light district. According to the Bangkok Post daily, the Thai woman was also in the suspect's hotel room "but didn't detect any irregularities except one time when he barred her from approaching a closet in the room." The English-language daily published a photograph that it said showed the three suspects relaxing in a hotel bar with two Thai female companions, under the headline: "Suspects partied in ...

Iranians planned to attack Israelis: Thailand Police

Bangkok, Thailand's Police chief says the Iranians who were arrested after accidentally exploding their rented home in Bangkok were plotting to attack Israeli diplomats. National Police Chief Prewpan Dhamapong told a Thai television station that ``the target of the operation was specific and aimed at Israeli diplomatic staff.'' His comments late Wednesday came shortly after Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Itzhak Shoham said the homemade "sticky" bombs found at the blast site were similar to devices used against Israeli Embassy targets in India and Georgia earlier this week. He called it a "network of terror." Two Iranian men were detained Tuesday in Bangkok after the explosion and a third was arrested Wednesday in ...

Blasts hit Bangkok, Israel blames Iran

Bangkok, A bizarre sequence of three blasts in the Thai capital led to arrest of two men, allegedly Iranian nationals, while police is hunting for another person amid mounting fears of more attacks on the lines of sticky bombs used in India and Georgia to target Israeli diplomatic cars. One of the Iranians, Saed Moradi, was held after being injured when an explosive he threw in an attempt to escape ended up blowing off his legs. Another, Mohummad Hazaei, was held at Bangkok airport. All three were staying in a rented house where stored explosives went off on Tuesday. The involvement of the Iranians in a likely bid to carry out terror attacks in Bangkok saw the plot being linked to the spreading Iran-Israel proxy war and attempts of Iran or Lebanon-based Hezbollah it backs to hit Israeli targets as revenge for the killing of its leader Imad Mughniyeh . The fourth anniversary of the killing fell on February 12. Thai police had foiled a planned attack on an Israeli target also in January by arresting an Iranian national. Neither Thai or Indian investigators confirmed a link between the incident in Bangkok on Tuesday and the bombing in New Delhi or the thwarted one in ...

Six bombs found and defused in eastern Bangkok

BANGKOK : Thai police found and defused six home-made explosive devices at three separate locations in the capital of Bangkok on early Friday morning, officials said. One suspect has been arrested. The six bombs were found at around 4 a.m. local time in eastern Bangkok. One explosive device was placed in front of a Bangkok Bank branch, two were found at a road intersection and three more were found under a bridge near a market. Police said the bombs were found after officers arrested a man about an hour earlier on suspicion of planting a bomb at a traffic island in front of the Government Lottery Office (GLO) on December 6. The suspect then told police he had set bombs in three different locations. According to the MCOT news agency, the suspect is a resident from Rayong province and was working with several others. He reportedly told police that the group had planned to place explosive devices in eight locations in Bangkok but only managed to do so at three locations. Bomb disposal experts disabled the devices which were found on Friday. The device found on December 6 was said to be incomplete and would not have been able to explode.
