Canada pulls out of Kyoto accord
Ottawa, Canada has withdrawn from the Kyoto Protocol, thereby saving about USD 14 billion in penalties, Environment Minister Peter Kent announced Monday.
Kent blamed the "incompetent Liberal government" of former prime minister Jean Chretien for signing the accord without taking action to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Now, Kent said, it is far too late for Canada to meet its Kyoto requirements, Xinhua reported.
Canada had to inform the UN by the end of the year of its decision to leave the Kyoto process, or it would be legally bound to pay the penalty.
"Kyoto for Canada is in the past. As such, we are invoking our legal right to formally withdraw," Kent told reporters in the foyer of the House of Commons.
"It's now clear that Kyoto is not the path forward," he said.
Kent made the announcement about two hours after returning from the Durban negotiations for a new carbon reduction framework. He told reporters he waited until after the Durban conference had ended because he had told a senior UN official that he did not want to disrupt the negotiations in South Africa.
Canada, along with other signatories of the Kyoto Accord, was required to reduce its greenhouse gas ... Read Full Story

Canadian school bans footballs and baseballs from playground
Washington, A school in Toronto, Canada has banned soccer balls, baseballs, footballs, tennis balls and volleyballs from the school grounds.
This step taken up by the Earl Beatty Public School has angered both students and parents.
According to the Toronto Star, the School sent letters to the parents stating that nobody could bring any of the balls to the junior and senior schools after a series of serious incidents, where both staff and students were struck in the playground.
The temporary ban means only Nerf balls or sponge balls can be used by students at the school for now on.
School trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher said that the most recent incident was that of a parent, who was hit in the head by a soccer ball and suffered a concussion.
“I think the principal is reacting in a rational way. You don’t want anyone to be injured,” Fox News quoted Cary-Meagher as saying.
Anna Caputo, a communications officer at the Toronto District School Board, said the ban was temporary and that the school would monitor the situation ... Read Full Story

Canadian MP from the Mississauga-Erindale constituency Bob Dechert stated this while on a visit to the Golden Temple yesterday. “We are working for better relations with India,” he said.
He was honoured by SGPC officials, led by SGPC publicity wing in charge Bhai Ram Singh, with siropas and pictures of the Golden Temple. “I feel myself to be amidst a celestial atmosphere at the Golden Temple. It is an epitome of spirituality,” said Bob.
Expressing concern over rising number of unscrupulous travel agents in India, particularly Punjab, Bob said his government was likely to come out with a list of genuine travel and educational consultants, so as to save gullible people desirous of going to Canada from any inconvenience.
However, Bob said Punjabis were welcome to Canada since they have contributed a lot towards the improvement of the economy of his country. ... Read Full Story
