Google best place to work in US: Fortune

Washington, Internet giant Google has been by Fortune magazine as the best place to work in the US. The Mountain View, California-based company hired about 7,000 people in 2011, the most intense hiring spree in its 13-year history, which moved Google up from fourth to first on Fortune's annual list of the 100 best companies to work for, Xinhua reported. "Employees rave about their mission, the culture, and the famous perks of the Plex: bocce courts, a bowling alley, eyebrow shaping (for a fee) in the New York office," Fortune wrote. "What people often focus on are the flashy, showy things, like the massages and the food, which are important to us. But they are not the real story about what makes our culture work," Laszlo Bock, Google's senior vice president for people operations, told San Jose Mercury News, a daily newspaper in Silicon Valley. Larry Page, Google co-founder and chief executive officer, said in an interview with Fortune: "We've always been good at making sure we're treating employees flexibly. You treat people with respect. They tend to return the favor to the company. And that goes for ...

Can't control content, Google, Facebook tell court

New Delhi, Google India and Facebook India Monday again told the Delhi High Court that it was impossible for them to control content with billions of people accessing the websites. The court adjourned till Jan 19 the hearing related to allegedly objectionable content on 21 websites. Senior advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul, appearing for Google India, said that the summons issued to social networking sites by a metropolitan magistrate showed complete lack of understanding about how the online system worked. He argued that the issue was related to the freedom of speech. "The issue relates to a constitutional issue of freedom of speech and expression, and suppressing it was not possible as the right to freedom of speech in democratic India separates us from a totalitarian regime like China," he said. Arguing that Google India and Google Inc. were different entities, he clarified: “It has nothing to do with Google India directly or indirectly, I am not responsible for it.” He submitted that the petitioner company had no control over websites where the objectionable material was posted. “I am only a search engine, the offending materials of websites have ...

Google awarded US patent for driverless car technology

Washington, The U.S. patent for self-driving cars has been awarded to Internet search giant Google. The intellectual rights relate to a method to switch a vehicle from a human-controlled mode into the state where it takes charge of the wheel. It explains how the car would know when to take control, where it is located and which direction to drive in. The search firm suggests the technology could be used to offer tours of tourist locations or to send faulty models to repair shops. The application for Transitioning a Mixed-mode Vehicle to Autonomous Mode was applied for in May, but had been hidden from public view until this week. The document describes using two sets of sensors. The first identifies a "landing strip" when the vehicle stops. This then triggers the second set which receives data informing the machine where it is positioned and where it should go. Google says the landing strip could simply be a mark on the ground, a sign on a wall, or lines or arrows showing where the vehicle should be parked. To detect which landing strip it has been parked at, the document says the car could activate a GPS (global positioning system) receiver to find its rough ...
