Strike by transporters hits fuel supply
Jalandhar, January 29 (Doaba News Service)- The supply of petroleum and diesel to various parts of the region was affected following a strike by the Jalandhar Oil Tanker Union here yesterday.
Transporters are protesting against a fine of Rs 6,000 per vehicle levied by the Indian Oil Corporation for VTS equipment for keeping track of vehicles from oil depots en route their destination. Scores of trucks could be seen parked outside the depot of the corporation at Suchi Pind till late in the evening.
Kishan Lal Sharma and Ashok Sarin, leaders of the union, said the company had deducted the money from their dues by levying charges for the equipment on their vehicles that were not functional due to some technical glitch. The authorities have so far deducted Rs 5 lakh from then and efforts were afoot to deduct Rs 30 lakh in the next instalment, they added.
What has irked the agitators is the unilateral decision of the company even when the equipment had developed a snag for no fault of theirs and that, too, after three years of its installation.
“We can understand the fine if the equipment had been stolen or was damaged by them but charging Rs 6,000 for a faulty piece was ... Read Full Story

Retirement age extension decried
Jalandhar, January 26 (Doaba News Service)- The Punjab Non-Gazetted/Gazetted Employees Organisation has found flaws and anomalies in the decision of the state government on granting extension of services to those retiring in 2010.
Organisation president Uma Kant Tewari said the decision was not employee-friendly as those seeking promotion in 2010 will retire without rising up to the due post. “Such a decision has led to groupism within employees. The decision of not granting extension to those retiring in 2011 or later is not wise. This will also put an additional pressure on the government, as it will be forced to pay pension liability to a large number of employees in 2011,” he pointed out.
Members of the organisation have demanded that the retirement age of all state government employees be raised to 60 from 58. ... Read Full Story

28 kg heroin seized
Amritsar, January 22 (Doaba News Service)- The State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) today seized 28 kg of heroin worth Rs 140 crore in the international market from two smugglers.
The alleged smugglers — Ranjinder Singh of Chogawan village here (now residing in the Sundar Nagar area) and Baljit Singh, a resident of Hari Nagar (New Delhi) — were held near the Jalandhar bypass when the former was handing over a car to the latter. The cell seized 25 kg of heroin concealed in the doors of the Tavera car.
What has baffled the counter-intelligence wing of the Punjab police is the involvement of Nigerians based in Delhi in the illegal trade. According to the police authorities, the consignment was to be delivered to a Nigerian in Delhi for smuggling to other countries through various routes. Earlier, too Nigerians were held in connection with the smuggling of narcotics.
“This consignment was to be delivered to Nigerans based in Delhi. Baljit used to supply the drug to Nigerians who smuggled the same to other countries,” said P. K. Rai, SSP, SSOC. He said later another haul of 3 kg of the contraband was seized on a disclosure made by Ranjinder Singh.
