Police limits visitors to Bibi Jagir Kaur in jail

Kapurthala, Former Punjab minister Bibi Jagir Kaur has demanded that a television be installed in her cell, undeterred by the furore over allegations of 'VIP treatment' being offered to her. Punjab DGP (prisons) Shashi Kant said that Jagir Kaur wrote to the jail authorities. "We can provide a TV in her barrack, but not in her cell for personal use. Every barrack has a TV," said Kant. "If she asks for the moon, I can't go and get the moon for her," he said. The Punjab police clamped down on the number of visitors frequenting the jail to meet Jagir Kaur. Ashwani takes over as state BJP chief

Chandigarh, February 5 (Doaba News Service) The Punjab BJP today decided in favour of a youthful leadership to take the party into the next Assembly elections in two years’ time by “electing” party general secretary Ashwani Sharma as its president. The new president, whose election was said to be “unopposed” by central observer Ram Lal Kovind, who said that all 43 delegates had seconded his candidature, set out to emulate BJP president Nitin Gadkari and said his actions would speak louder than words. Ashwani Sharma, who preferred not to speak about contentious issues only reminding mediapersons that he may be new to them but was 21 years old in the BJP, was quite frank with his party cadres. In this speech after being elected to the top post, Sharma said, “I admit there have been shortcomings in the working of the party in the past three years”. He said the party would have to reach out to the people in the next two years to win their confidence. HPCL distributors threaten protest

Jalandhar, January 19 (DNS)- Reacting to the “non-cooperative attitude” of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) authorities in smoothening the supply of LPG, the Punjab unit of the All-India LPG Distributors Federation today threatened that shutters of the HPCL gas agencies would be pulled down if the corporation failed to cover the backlog. Representatives of the federation alleged that only 40 per cent of the total LPG required was being supplied by the corporation. In these circumstances, it was not possible for the agency owners to fulfil the demand of the consumers. “As oil corporations are bearing losses to the tune of Rs 300 per cylinder, the HPCL authorities are forcing their distributors to minimise the sale, so that the magnitude of the loss can be brought down. Though the two other oil corporations, Bharat Petroleum and Indian Petroleum, are also bearing the same loss, they are successfully maintaining the supply line,” said Capt KJS Butter, president of the north-west region of the federation. He along with the state president of the federation, Harsimarjit Kaur, and distributors from all over the state threatened that the HPCL distributors ...
