Cocaine worth Rs 3 cr seized in Mohali
Ludhiana, February 5 (Doaba News Service)- The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), arrested two Nigerian nationals and seized 212 gm cocaine, worth Rs 3 crore in the international market, following a raid in Mohali. The accused are Ndidi Evans Peter and Monye Alexander, alias Ben Daniel Alex, and were arrested under the NDPS Act.
Rajiv Gupta, a DRI official, said the accused were nabbed following a tip-off. The DRI received information that Monye was operating his drug trade from Mohali. A raid was conducted on the residential premises of Monye Alexander and 212gm of white powder, suspected to be drugs, was recovered. The contraband has been sent to chemical examination. The official said the contraband was kept in a hydraulic door spring along with other mechanical tools, which was to be sent abroad through a courier. The DRI officials are suspecting the involvement of the duo behind the attempt of smuggling of 310 gm of heroin, also kept in a similar hydraulic door spring.

Panchayats put up fight against alcoholism
Patiala, February 4 (DNS)- In order to completely “discourage” alcohol consumption in their villages, the Panchayats of 44 villages of eight districts of Punjab have passed a resolution under Section 40 of the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act, urging the Excise and Taxation authorities not to allow liquor shops be opened in their villages from the next fiscal.
Representatives of 22 village Panchayats of Sangrur district also met State Excise and Taxation Officer A Venu Prasad in Patiala today in this regard. They said they would explore the possibility of taking legal recourse, in case the Excise Department allots liquor vends in their villages next fiscal. The villages that have taken this initiative are from Sangrur (22), Mohali (3), Bathinda (2), Ferozepur (1), Hoshiarpur (6), Barnala (3), Ludhiana (1), Patiala (3) and Faridkot (3).
Speaking to The Doaba Headlines, Sarpanch of village Chudal (Sangrur) Sukhdev Singh said they did not want the youth to spoil their life by getting addicted to alcohol.

Industrial unit fined Rs 2 cr
Ludhiana, February 4 (DNS)- In what could be described as one of the biggest cases of power theft, the enforcement staff of the PSEB caught an industrial unit in Rajpura in the act of stealing massive power through meter- tampering last evening.
The power supply of the industrial unit, engaged in wire drawing, was disconnected on the spot and a demand notice has been served for a penalty of Rs 2.06 crore. A case under relevant provisions of the Electricity Act has also been registered against the unit at the Anti-Power Theft police station at Patiala.
The Chief Engineer (Enforcement) of the PSEB, HS Randhawa, who personally supervised the entire operation with the assistance of enforcement officials from Khanna and Mohali without intimating local officials of the operations wing, told Doaba Headlines here yesterday that the firm, RK Welds, located on GT Road in Rajpura town has a connected load of 545 KW, categorised in large-scale (LS) supply.

Rs 2.28 cr for vets under zila parishads
Bathinda, January 24 (DNS)- The Department of Rural Development and Panchayats, Punjab, has allotted a budget to the tune of Rs 2,28,59,136 for giving a package to rural veterinary medical officers (veterinary doctors) working under zila parishads in all 20 districts of the state, for January and February. At present, 419 veterinary doctors have been working in the rural veterinary dispensaries throughout the state.
As per the allotment of the budget, Rs 17.68 lakh has been allotted to Amritsar district for 34 veterinary doctors. Likewise, Rs 14.56 lakh has been allotted to Bathinda district for 28 veterinary doctors. The amount of budget allotted to other districts is- Rs 16.34 lakh for 32 veterinary doctors of Gurdaspur district, Rs 10.12 lakh for 21 veterinary doctors of Patiala district, Rs 15.39 lakh for 24 veterinary doctors of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Rs 8.32 lakh for 16 veterinary doctors of Moga district, Rs 16.64 lakh for 32 veterinary doctors of Sangrur district, Rs 14.04 lakh for 27 veterinary doctors of Ludhiana district, Rs 5.72 lakh for 11 veterinary doctors of Faridkot district, Rs 3.64 lakh for seven veterinary doctors of Barnala district and Rs 19.24 lakh ...
