Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson quits amid 'bogus degree' scandal

Washington, Embattled Internet firm Yahoo's Chief Executive Scott Thompson has resigned after a controversy over a fake computer science college degree on his biography broke out. The departure is a victory for one of Yahoo's largest shareholder Third Point, which brought the discrepancy in Thompson's educational background to light. Dan Leob of Third Point had accused Thompson of faking his educational record, and called it 'insulting' to shareholders. According to The Telegraph, Ross Levinsohn, the head of the company's Americas division, was appointed as Thompson's temporary replacement. Fred Amoroso, who has recently joined the board of Yahoo was named as chairman. Russians to get USD 130,000 for London Olympics gold

Moscow, The Russian government has announced awards of USD 130,000 to Russian athletes who win a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. The government announced Friday that silver medalists would receive USD 82,000, while bronze winners would get USD 56,000. 107 years after quake, Himachal temple rebuilt

Shimla, A 400-year-old Hindu temple in Himachal Pradesh that was partially damaged over a century ago in a devastating earthquake has been reconstructed in its original style and will be open for the public later this month. The foundation of the Bharari Devi temple, located in Sarah village near Dharamsala town in Kangra district, was damaged when the Kangra Valley witnessed its most devastating earthquake of the century in 1905, killing more than 20,000 people. The quake had tilted the temple, some 250 km from state capital Shimla. "The temple was reconstructed at its original site after demolishing the original one. The new one is exactly a replica of the original one," Intach (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) Himachal chapter convener Malvika Pathania told IANS here. She said the stone and bricks were removed from the original one and documented. New ones were placed at the same place and location to maintain its original Shikhar style of architecture. Yahoo! names former PayPal President Scott Thompson as new CEO

SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA: Internet giant Yahoo!, Inc. on Wednesday named former PayPal President Scott Thompson as the company's new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Thompson's new position will become effective as of next Monday, at which time Tim Morse will resume his role as Chief Financial Officer. Morse had been working as the company's interim CEO. "Scott brings to Yahoo! a proven record of building on a solid foundation of existing assets and resources to reignite innovation and drive growth, precisely the formula we need at Yahoo!," said Roy Bostock, Chairman of the Yahoo! Punjab board starts semester system

Patiala, February 5 (Doaba News Service)- The Punjab School Education Board has decided to introduce semester system for Classes X and XII, in order to reduce the pressure of studies and make it more interesting. Making the announcement, Jagtar Singh Khatra, Controller, examination of the board and ex-DPI (schools), informed that this system would be applicable from session 2010-11. Talking to Doaba Headlines, Khatra said in earlier times, the syllabus for Class X and XII was limited because of less subjects and the annual examination system solved the purpose. Ludhiana, January 29 (Doaba News Service)- Gurjinder Singh (10) heard stories about his London-based father for a decade and waited all these years to be in his lap like his counterparts. But he was destined not to see him alive. In his innocence, he laid a wreath on his body unable to understand the death as his father, Sukhwinder Singh, a braveheart who was killed by muggers in east London a fortnight ago, was consigned to flames amidst heartrending scenes at his native Salempur village. Retirement age extension decried

Jalandhar, January 26 (Doaba News Service)- The Punjab Non-Gazetted/Gazetted Employees Organisation has found flaws and anomalies in the decision of the state government on granting extension of services to those retiring in 2010. Organisation president Uma Kant Tewari said the decision was not employee-friendly as those seeking promotion in 2010 will retire without rising up to the due post. “Such a decision has led to groupism within employees. The decision of not granting extension to those retiring in 2011 or later is not wise. Sidhu to raise matter in LS

Over 3,400 elementary teachers to be recruited

Chandigarh, January 12 (Doaba News Service)- To fill the remaining vacancies in elementary schools the Punjab Government will recruit more than 3,400 primary teachers before the new academic session. This was stated by Dr Upinderjit Kaur, Education and Languages Minister, here yesterday. At a meeting with representatives of the unemployed ETT Teachers Association, the Minister said the department had already submitted a memorandum in this connection to be approved by the Punjab Cabinet. This requirement of teachers had been finalised after the rationalisation of posts in schools as well as retirements to be over up to March 31, 2010, she added. The Minister added that the government had already recruited 14,000 teachers and 10,000 were to be recruited before the coming academic session as the process was on fast track. Besides, more than 7,000 computer teachers were being recruited by the department.
