Chef Sanjeev Kapoor takes tour of White House kitchen
Washington, India's celebrated chef Sanjeev Kapoor was given a rare insight into the historic kitchen of the White House, which prepares the food for US President Barack Obama, his family and the large number of guests invited to the resident of the first family every day.
Kapoor was not only given the tour of the historic kitchen, but also had an intensive discussion with the team of White House chefs led by its executive chef, William 'Bill' Yosses, for several hours yesterday.
He was accompanied by K N Vinod, an eminent Indian-American chef from Washington who runs three popular Indian restaurant in the nation's capital.
Yosses, said to be a great lover of Indian food himself, took Kapoor and Vinod around the White House kitchen, but also gave him a tour of the kitchen garden of the First Lady Mitchell Obama.
A frequent visitor to Indique and Indique Heights - the two popular Indian restaurants in the nation's capital - Yosses discussed at length of the growing popularity of Indian food in the US and at the white house.

Millers importing poor quality rice into state
Moga, February 4 (Doaba News Service)- Rice traders in the state have been importing raw rice of poor quality from outside states and mixing it with locally produced rice, the milling of which is in progress these days.
It’s strange that this is being done at a time when the state already has a buffer stock of rice over 80 lakh metric tonnes and paddy 95 lakh metric tonnes under the milling process in the state. But rice millers are allegedly mixing quantities of low-priced rice grains imported from other states with FCI stocks and selling the better rice in the open market at higher prices. The entire procurement of paddy in Punjab is sent to private millers for cleaning, shelling and polishing of grains. Millers return the finished product back to the FCI for the central pool.
It is learnt that during the past two months, after the rice milling process began in the state, raw rice of various varieties worth crores of rupees is being imported from other states like Bihar, UP, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka by rice millers/traders, the maximum quantities of which are mixed in locally milled rice, and is being given to FCI stocks. Panchayats get Rs 90 lakh
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 26 (DNS)- As many as 60 gram panchayats of the state were awarded with Rs 1.5 lakh each for improving sex ratio in their respective villages during a state-level function held at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College yesterday.
Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was supposed to distribute the cheques among village panchayats, failed to reach the venue. Punjab Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla did the needful.
Speaking on the occasion, Chawla said the panchayats could utilise these funds in various developmental works for the uplift of girl child and other pending works of their villages.
She said the sex ratio in the state had improved. “During the 2001 census, the state recorded a poor ratio of 796 females per 1,000 males. The recent surveys have shown this figure soar to 838 last year,” she said.
She said 1,700 doctors had been recruited by the state government. Also 1,180 doctors were recruited through zila parishad, 312 through the Punjab Public Service Commission, 102 through the National Rural Health Scheme and 43 other doctors through direct recruitment.
