Braveheart NRI cremated

Ludhiana, January 29 (Doaba News Service)- Gurjinder Singh (10) heard stories about his London-based father for a decade and waited all these years to be in his lap like his counterparts. But he was destined not to see him alive. In his innocence, he laid a wreath on his body unable to understand the death as his father, Sukhwinder Singh, a braveheart who was killed by muggers in east London a fortnight ago, was consigned to flames amidst heartrending scenes at his native Salempur village. He was born after his father left in search of greener pastures. He was to see him for the first time. But the fate did not give him a single chance. Gurjinder’s unfortunate mother, Sandeep Kaur, fell unconscious after seeing her husband dead. The condition of Sukhwinder’s mother, Swaranjeet Kaur, was pitiable. ‘‘I wish I had not sent you abroad,” she was heard saying while crying bitterly. Sukhwinder’s body was brought to Ludhiana last night by his father, Pakhar Singh, and kept at a gurdwara here. ‘‘I did not know I will bring him dead. I am completely shattered,” he said with emotions overpowering him. Sukhwinder Singh, whose family now lives in Dholanwal village near ...

Ramoowalia demands jobs for youth

Takhtupura (Moga), January 15 (DNS)- The President of the SAD(A), Simranjit Singh Mann, has reiterated the demand of a free homeland, Khalistan, for the Sikh community, which was the only solution to all political problems of discrimination being faced by the Sikh community in the state and elsewhere in the country. He was addressing a public rally at Takhtupura in the district on Thursday. Rejecting the Nanakshahi calendar, he said after the expiry of the five-year term, the SGPC has no legal right to interfere into the affairs of the Sikhs. The Lok Bhalai Party also organised its separate rally. The party President, former Union Minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, flayed the Akalis and Congress men blaming them for doing nothing for the youth of Punjab, who were being exploited by travel agents on the pretext of sending them abroad in search of jobs. Adding that the state government should take adequate steps to provide opportunities of jobs for the youth so that they do not go outside the country in search of jobs, he said there was a need to boost the morale of the youth instead of leaving them in trouble at the hands of the travel agents. Muktsar, January 14 (DNS)- Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today warned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to restrain Congress activists from interfering in Sikh religious affairs to prevent serious consequences. Badal was addressing a political conference of the SAD here at the Maghi mela on the occasion of Lohri. Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab BJP president Rajinder Bhandari and SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar were among those present. The Chief Minister asked Manmohan Singh to rein in those Congress leaders who were trying to disturb peace by interfering in the religious affairs of the Sikhs in view of the coming general elections to the SGPC. Such manoeuvring of the Congress was a threat to Sikh-Hindu unity in the state, he said. He alleged that the Congress had been trying to capture the SGPC through its “agents” but so far had miserably failed to achieve this because the Sikhs in general had understood its gameplan and refused to oblige it. He called upon the people not to be swayed by the false propaganda of the Congress to destabilise the SGPC through its “cronies” like Paramjit Singh Sarna. Accusing the Congress of engineering the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, ...

PCC urges PM to accord Heritage City status to Holy City Amritsar

Amritsar, December 16 (DNS)- The Punjabi Cultural Council (PCC) has urged the Prime Minister to accord the heritage city status to the holy city Amritsar soon as it houses the temporal seat of Sikh religion and also a birthplace of Luv and Kush. In a letter sent to the PM Dr Manmohan Singh, PCC Chairman S. Jaswant Singh Chhapa rued that it was ironical that Amritsar was being deprived the heritage status even as other cities of the country, which were not as old as Amritsar was, have already been accorded the heritage status. "So what is preventing the government from according the status to Amritsar which deserves even more,” he asked the GOI. He said that Amritsar city houses 10.03 lakh people (2001 census), 3000 more than the technical requirement for shifting it from Category B to C, the category which lists 28 cities on the basis of their religious, historical and tourist importance. These cities have got greater financial contribution on the patter of 80:20 to develop their infrastructure, S Chappa lamented. Making a forceful demand for declaring Amritsar a heritage city, the PCC Chairman further said that the historic city houses a pride of places which Harmandar ...

DSGMC asks ex-judge to probe Ludhiana incidents

Ludhiana, December 10 (DNS)- The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has assigned to a former Judge of the Delhi High Court the task of inquiring into the alleged police ‘‘atrocities’’ on Sikhs while they were protesting against holding of a congregation by a religious leader, Ashutosh Maharaj, in Ludhiana on Saturday. DSGMC President Paramjit Singh Sarna said they had asked former Judge TS Doabia to conduct an inquiry and submit a report to them within seven days. They would forward the report to the Union Government and the state government for further action. ‘‘If the Judge indicts the police, then we would take up the matter in the court. The matter would be taken up with the state and union governments first. If they don’t do anything, then we would move a court,’’ said Sarna. Stating that a magisterial inquiry ordered by the state government into the incident was a mere eyewash, Sarna said the father-son duo (the Badals) were behind everything. They were out to attract a vote bank managed by the RSS. ‘‘It is shocking that a man was killed and 11 injured, two of them seriously but the government did not do anything. They just ordered ...
