Rape Victim’s Detention Case goes to Hoshiarpur police

Jalandhar, January 29 (DNS)- The DIG, Jalandhar Range, yesterday handed over the case of the detention of a minor rape victim and her mother to the Hoshiarpur police after withdrawing it from the local police. DIG Ishwar Singh also constituted a four-member committee headed by Pramod Ban, SSP, Hoshiarpur, for the investigation of the case. An IPS officer, Inderbir Singh of the Hoshiarpur police, will also probe the case. Ishwar Singh said the case was transferred to the Hoshiarpur police for transparent and impartial investigation as per the wishes of the victims’ family. The DIG had marked an inquiry to the local police on Wednesday but following objections from the family members of the victims and activists of the Pendu Mazdoor Union, he handed over the case to the Hoshiarpur police. Led by Tarsem Peter, president of the union, family members of the victims today met the DIG and alleged that the district police was mounting pressure on the aggrieved party to effect a compromise in the case. Gurdaspur police emerges No.1

Patiala, January 24 (DNS)- The Gurdaspur police has achieved the distinction of being the number one among all district police in the state. Gurdaspur managed the top slot on the basis of several performance indicators. The performance of all 24 police districts of Punjab during September, October and November last year was assessed by the Punjab police. As per the data tabulated by the state police, Gurdaspur was on the top in terms of tracing murder cases, recovery of case property in theft cases, seizure of narcotics and action taken against proclaimed offenders. Gurdaspur is followed by Ferozepur and Hoshiarpur police. Patiala failed to make it to the top 10, as it stood 11th. The district police of the industrial hub of Punjab - Ludhiana (rural) and Ludhiana (urban) were ranked at number 23 and 20, respectively. The report has been sent to the respective SSPs. A letter, written by Punjab DGP PS Gill to the police heads of all districts, mentioned, “Those districts, which had minimum pendency scored high. I expect that the SSPs of the districts lagging behind would examine their weaknesses and take remedial measures in order to improve their performance in ...

Change image of police: Sukhbir

Chandigarh, January 24 (DNS)- Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal yesterday exhorted the Punjab police to make collective efforts to change the perception of people regarding the image of the police. Presiding over the monthly review meeting of the Police Department in which besides DGP PS Gill, top brass of the police, all Zonal IGs, Range DIGs and all SSPs of the districts participated, Sukhbir Badal said the police must focus on those areas of crime which affect public at large the most. “Our image is on stake and we must be conscious of this fact,” he said. Appreciating the Police Department for conducting the first-ever performance appraisal of all district SSPs on the broad parameters of crime detection, services to the public from the police and in-house administration, he said the implementation and recoveries under the NDPS Act and solving the cases of theft and snatchings should get priority in the broad parameters set up by the department. Asking the DGP to change the parameters for issuing different commendation certificates, Sukhbir Badal said that not going by the routine ACRs, we should focus on real work done by the officials. Sukhbir Badal said that ...

28 kg heroin seized

Amritsar, January 22 (Doaba News Service)- The State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) today seized 28 kg of heroin worth Rs 140 crore in the international market from two smugglers. The alleged smugglers — Ranjinder Singh of Chogawan village here (now residing in the Sundar Nagar area) and Baljit Singh, a resident of Hari Nagar (New Delhi) — were held near the Jalandhar bypass when the former was handing over a car to the latter. The cell seized 25 kg of heroin concealed in the doors of the Tavera car. What has baffled the counter-intelligence wing of the Punjab police is the involvement of Nigerians based in Delhi in the illegal trade. According to the police authorities, the consignment was to be delivered to a Nigerian in Delhi for smuggling to other countries through various routes. Earlier, too Nigerians were held in connection with the smuggling of narcotics. “This consignment was to be delivered to Nigerans based in Delhi. Baljit used to supply the drug to Nigerians who smuggled the same to other countries,” said P. K. Rai, SSP, SSOC. He said later another haul of 3 kg of the contraband was seized on a disclosure made by Ranjinder Singh. Preliminary ...

Amarinder ‘framed up’ in rape case

Chandigarh, January 16 (DNS)- The police probe into alleged rape case going on against Amarinder Singh has so far revealed that the matter is turning out to be a case of implication. The complainant is still untraceable and preliminary enquiry by the police indicates that she was threatened to make a statement against the former Chief Minister of Punjab. The enquiry has also revealed that the organiser of the press conference, where the allegations of rape were levelled, Shamsher Singh Jagera, is an accused in a rape case registered way back in 2003 at Ludhiana. To top it all, he has “refused to join the enquiry”. In a report submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Ludhiana’s SSP Sukchain Singh Gill has asserted that “despite best efforts” the complainant could not be traced. But, her sister and mother were associated with the enquiry. The complainant’s mother told the police that on November 15 last, the purported victim called her up. She said her statement was “recorded in the press against Amarinder Singh”. Elaborating, the complainant said she was “threatened that, in case she did not make the statement against the ex-Chief Minister, her family ...

Naib Tehsildar seeks security

Patiala, January 15 (DNS)- Apprehending threat to his life, Naib Tehsildar Jasbir Singh Walia has demanded security cover from the Patiala police. Walia, who was allegedly assaulted by former Municipal Councillor Gurdev Singh Punia and his men at the Gymkhana Club on January 10, has also demanded immediate arrest of the accused. Expressing dissatisfaction over the manner in which the police was dealing with the matter, Walia said it was really shocking that the accused were still roaming around freely. Elaborating on the matter, Walia, who was discharged from the hospital today, said, “While I was posted in Patiala, I refused to extend undue favours to Punia. After that, he started nurturing grudge against me. I am currently posted at Ludhiana. On January 10, I went to the Gymkhana Club in connection with some work. Spotting me there, Punia and his friends started abusing me.” When he reacted, Punia and his men badly thrashed him, inflicting injuries on him, he added. Though the Civil Lines police registered a case under Section 307 of the IPC against Punia and others, investigations into the matter were progressing at a snail’s pace. “It is beyond understanding why ...
