22 Oct, 2026 05:30 AM

The Indian Embassy in Yemen has begun gathering information after reports emerged that a boat carrying 14 Indian nationals was attacked near the Yemeni coast. The incident comes amid rising tensions in the Red Sea. The Indian Embassy in Yemen said, “We have seen reports today of an incident involving a yacht carrying 14 Indian nationals near the coast of Yemen.” The embassy said it was working to establish the facts and would provide all possible assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian nationals. According to reports, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a military spokesperson associated with Yemen’s Houthi group, claimed that the yacht carrying 14 Indians was targeted near Zukur Island in the Red Sea. He said Yemeni forces were conducting rescue operations and that further information would be shared later. As of the time of writing, it was not clear who was responsible for the incident, what condition the people aboard the yacht were in, or whether the vessel had sustained any damage. The claim of an attack had not been independently verified. ##

India’s Concerns Over the Safety of Commercial Ships

The Red Sea connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. It is a crucial maritime route for international trade and energy transportation. However, regional conflicts have increased security risks for vessels navigating the area. In August, the Indian-flagged vessel *MSV Faiz Noor Olia* sank in the Red Sea after being struck by a projectile near Yemen. According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, all 14 crew members were rescued, including 13 Indians. India has called for attacks on commercial vessels to be stopped and for freedom of navigation along international maritime routes to be restored in accordance with international law. The Indian Embassy said it would provide the necessary assistance as more facts about the incident emerge.
