Doraha (Amrish Anand) — Senior Dr. Davinder Sharma and Dr. Annu Sharma of Sharma Dental Hospital, Doraha, in a special conversation, shared that our teeth are very sensitive and require special care. However, we usually start thinking about our teeth only when they begin to decay or cause pain. They emphasized that strong and healthy teeth are essential for properly chewing and digesting food. Therefore, we should pay special attention to oral hygiene. They said that the health of your teeth is a vital part of your overall health. To maintain good health, special attention should be paid to dental cleanliness. It is recommended to brush twice daily—morning and night—using a good quality toothbrush. One should consume food rich in Vitamin C and D. Smoking, chewing tobacco, and non-vegetarian diets can cause teeth to deteriorate quickly. Neglecting your teeth indicates poor personal care.Food particles stuck in the teeth can cause inflammation, leading to swollen gums and bleeding while brushing. If the hard, yellow tartar on the teeth is not removed, it can lead to major dental and gum diseases. Brushing after meals, or at least in the morning and at night, helps prevent tartar buildup. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. Food should be consumed in limited quantities and teeth should be cleaned afterward.
1. Brush Regularly
Brush your teeth twice daily—after waking up in the morning and before going to bed at night. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. This keeps gums and tooth enamel healthy and prevents discoloration. Brush for at least two minutes, ensuring all corners and surfaces are cleaned. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
2. Flossing is Important
Brushing alone is not enough to clean the surfaces between the teeth. Flossing regularly helps remove plaque and food particles stuck in those areas.
3. Use Mouthwash
Mouthwash helps kill bacteria and remove bad breath. To strengthen teeth and prevent cavities, choose an alcohol-based mouthwash. Use it after brushing and flossing, but avoid rinsing your mouth with water afterward.
4. Avoid Sugary and Acidic Foods
Consumption of sugary and acidic foods can lead to plaque and cavities. Limit intake of candies, soda, and packaged fruit juices. Brush your teeth after consuming such items.
5. Stay Hydrated
Keeping the body hydrated helps prevent health problems, bad breath, and dry mouth. Dry mouth increases the risk of dental issues.
6. Quit Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking is a major cause of gum diseases, oral cancer, and other dental problems. Excessive alcohol consumption can cause bad breath and yellow teeth.
7. Regular Checkups
Regular dental checkups are important to maintain oral health. This helps identify problems early and treat them before they worsen.
People often think only sweets cause tooth decay, but that’s not true. Cavities form when any carbohydrate-rich food comes into contact with the teeth. Poor oral hygiene can lead to several problems. Any food containing carbohydrates can cause dental decay. Tooth decay happens due to acid buildup in the mouth. Constant snacking can also lead to dental issues. Gradually, teeth can become discolored. The color of your teeth depends on your oral habits. Visit a dentist every six months to keep your teeth clean. See a dentist before a problem becomes serious.
