Railways Approves ₹647 Crore Projects in Gujarat and Bihar to Boost Capacity and Connectivity

In a significant move to strengthen rail infrastructure and improve operational efficiency, the Ministry of Railways has approved two major projects in Gujarat and Bihar with a total investment of ₹647.58 crore.

The approved projects include the construction of a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover at Kosamba in Gujarat and a new rail bypass at Bhagalpur in Bihar. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and ensure safer and smoother train operations on critical routes.

₹647.58 crore worth rail projects approved in Gujarat and Bihar
  • Kosamba RoR flyover to enable seamless connectivity with Mumbai–Vadodara line
  • Bhagalpur bypass to ease congestion and eliminate engine reversals
  • Projects aimed at improving safety, punctuality, and operational efficiency
  • Part of Railways’ push for capacity expansion and network decongestion

Kosamba Rail Flyover in Gujarat
The Railways has sanctioned a Rail Over Rail flyover for the Kosamba–Umrapada Gauge Conversion section (9.20 km) under Western Railway, with an estimated cost of ₹344.38 crore.

The project is crucial as the Kosamba–Umrapada line lies along the busy Mumbai–Vadodara main route. Due to the presence of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, direct surface connectivity is not feasible. The new flyover will eliminate the need for surface crossings and allow seamless integration of the gauge-converted section with the main line.

This is expected to ensure uninterrupted train movement, improve safety, and maximize the benefits of the ongoing gauge conversion work.

Bhagalpur Rail Bypass in Bihar
In Bihar, the Ministry has approved the construction of a 13.38 km rail bypass at Bhagalpur under Eastern Railway, at a cost of ₹303.20 crore.

The bypass will connect Gonudham Halt on the Barahat–Bhagalpur section with Sabour on the Bhagalpur–Sahibganj section, helping decongest the heavily burdened Bhagalpur junction.

Currently, the Barahat–Bhagalpur route is operating at over 125% capacity, leading to delays and operational challenges. Trains passing through Bhagalpur often require engine reversal, causing further delays. The new bypass will eliminate this requirement, significantly improving punctuality and operational flow.

Boost to Rail Network Efficiency
These projects are part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance capacity, improve safety, and decongest critical sections of the network. The developments are expected to benefit both passenger and freight services, supporting the growing transportation demands across the country.
