Three people were killed and 10 others injured in a multi-vehicle crash on a busy road in northern Calgary, Canada. Two Calgary Transit buses caught fire during the incident. Security agencies are investigating the crash.
Police Staff Sergeant Andy Woodward said the chain of collisions began when a transit bus struck a car, causing the car to collide with other vehicles ahead. After the initial impact, the bus continued through an intersection and crashed into another transit bus that was waiting at a bus stop.
The collision sparked a fire, and the second bus crossed to the other side of the road before hitting three additional vehicles. According to Woodward, the second bus ran on natural gas, which contributed to the fire. Its roof was completely engulfed in flames, with flames visible in the sky.
The front of the bus that triggered the chain-reaction crash was severely crushed and damaged. Its steering wheel was hanging beneath the flames. Woodward said he had been a police officer for 36 years and believed this was possibly the biggest accident he had ever worked on.
19 People Injured, 10 Taken to Hospital
Adam Loria, a spokesperson for Emergency Medical Services (EMS), said a total of 19 people were injured, including the three people who died. Ten people were transported to hospital by ambulance. One police officer was also among the injured and was taken to hospital.
Loria described the incident as a very serious crash.
