Anti-Blasphemy Law: Protection or Threat?

Today’s time is putting our wisdom, understanding, and collective Sikh thinking to the ultimate test. There is a growing demand from certain sections for an “Anti-Blasphemy Law,” but it is crucial to carefully examine the real consequences of such a demand.

First and foremost, one truth must be firmly स्थापित in our hearts — Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is supreme. Their greatness cannot be measured or judged by any human law or court of justice.

This demand raises several fundamental questions — What will be the definition of blasphemy? Who will decide whether an act qualifies as blasphemy or not? Which judge will deliver the final verdict? These questions highlight the ambiguity surrounding the issue, suggesting that such a law could become a tool for misuse rather than justice.

At the same time, observing certain incidents raises another concern — could there be a larger agenda or political game behind such demands? Because without administrative consent, it is generally difficult for such actions to continue for an extended period.

Experts believe that if such a law is enacted, the Sikh community itself may face the greatest consequences. A law created for protection today could be used against the same community tomorrow.

Another important point is that Indian law already includes several provisions addressing such issues — including laws against hurting religious sentiments, damaging religious places, and inciting riots. In this context, a critical question arises: if existing laws are not being effectively implemented, how will introducing a new law change the situation?

A concerning aspect of this debate is the silence of institutions and leaders whose voices should have guided the community — Sikh organizations, religious authorities, scholars, and preachers. This silence is being seen as a matter of serious concern for the Panth.

Dear Sangat, this is a time to act with wisdom, not emotion. This is not just a legal issue, but a deeply sensitive matter connected to the future of the Panth. The decisions made today can have lasting consequences for generations to come.
