The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken significant steps to enhance voter convenience and accessibility ahead of the 2026 General Elections and bye-elections. The election schedule for Legislative Assemblies in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, along with bye-elections in six states, was announced on March 15, 2026.
In preparation, the Commission has directed Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) across States and Union Territories to ensure that all 2,18,807 polling stations are equipped with Assured Minimum Facilities (AMFs) and adequate voter assistance on polling day.
These AMFs include essential amenities such as safe drinking water, shaded waiting areas, toilets with water facilities, proper lighting, and ramps designed for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). Each polling station will also have standard voting compartments and clear signage to guide voters. Additionally, benches will be placed at regular intervals in queues to provide comfort to voters while they wait.
To improve voter awareness, four standardized Voter Facilitation Posters (VFPs) will be prominently displayed at all polling stations. These posters will include important information such as polling station details, the list of candidates, voting guidelines (do’s and don’ts), approved identification documents, and the voting process.
The ECI will also set up Voter Assistance Booths (VABs) at every polling location. Staffed by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other officials, these booths will help voters locate their polling booth number and serial number in the electoral roll. The booths will be clearly marked and easily visible to voters.
In a move aimed at further improving voter convenience, a mobile phone deposit facility will be introduced outside polling stations. Voters will be required to switch off their phones and deposit them with designated volunteers before entering the polling area, and collect them after casting their vote.
The Commission has emphasized that the provision of AMFs and accessibility measures is mandatory and will be closely monitored to ensure strict compliance. All field officials have been instructed to complete the necessary arrangements well in advance of polling dates, ensuring a smooth, accessible, and pleasant voting experience for every elector.
